This renovated space nearly triples its physical area, expanding from 534 to 1,439 square meters, and increases its installed capacity from 17 to 24 hospital beds, consolidating its position as the most important center of its kind in Antioquia and one of the most prominent in the country.

This advancement responds to the sustained growth in the demand for burn care among the adult population. In 2024 alone, Hospital San Vicente Fundación Medellín treated 1,077 adults with burns, 82% of whom required hospitalization—a figure that confirms the level of complexity and the need for a more adequate infrastructure for their care.

“A burn compromises the physical, emotional, and functional integrity of the patient. Therefore, the environment where care is provided directly influences their recovery process. This relocation and expansion will allow us to improve the care of burn patients with more agile procedures and in an environment designed for their well-being,” explains Dr. Andrés Zapata Cárdenas, director of the Adults Unit at Hospital San Vicente Fundación Medellín.

Quemaduras en adultos: causas, edades y necesidades de atención

Among the most frequent causes in adults, burns from hot liquids (40%), flammable substances (18%), and electrical accidents (8%) stand out. Although less frequent, fire or flame burns—which account for 7% of cases—require hospitalization in more than 80% of patients due to the severity of the injuries.

The highest concentration of cases occurs in people between the ages of 31 and 50, followed by young adults between 19 and 30. These figures reflect the social and occupational impact of this type of injury, which primarily affects people of productive working age.

The new Unit, located in Block 12 of the Medellín Hospital, improves key aspects such as privacy, infection control, efficiency in care workflows, and comfort for patients and companions. Among its new features, it highlights two independent procedure rooms—which were previously shared—seven individual rooms (three with aerosol isolation capacity), outpatient clinics, and semi-private rooms with optimal mobility and comfort conditions.

In addition, it is designed to integrate basic hospitalization, physical rehabilitation, procedure rooms, outpatient clinics, and psychosocial support, all within the same specialized clinical environment.

A work made possible by the trust and generosity of donors

At a crucial moment for the healthcare system in Colombia, this project also represents a symbol of collective solidarity. The new Adults Burn Unit became a reality thanks to the commitment of benefactors who trusted in the Hospital’s purpose and aligned themselves with its vision of humane and specialized care.

The Sierra Family joined in 2022 as a promoter, donor, and ally to drive the relocation and expansion of this unit. Their initial backing paved the way for a second, decisive contribution to this project from Milagros Enterprise Group, which chose to join due to the profound social impact of this service. Others have also joined, providing both in-kind and financial contributions that add to this collective effort.

With the financing of 70% of the civil works, this project takes a decisive step in consolidating itself as one of the most important burn units in the country. Its inauguration marks an advancement in collaborative and strategic work for specialized care in Colombia. In its process of expansion and strengthening, the Hospital plans new clinical and technological investments which, thanks to donations from more benefactors, will allow it to continue growing in capacity, coverage, and excellence in high-complexity medical care.

“Since our origins, donors have been an essential part of the Hospital’s history. Their support is reflected not only in concrete and equipment, but also in the quality of care, equity, medical training, and opportunities for life. In the midst of a difficult situation for the healthcare sector, their generosity speaks to the power of building collectively,” highlights Andrés Zapata Cárdenas, director of the Adults Unit at Hospital San Vicente Fundación Medellín.

Furthermore, in the second half of the year, Hospital San Vicente Fundación Medellín will receive an evaluation visit from the International Society for Burn Injuries (ISBI), a key step toward its international positioning as a center of excellence in burn care. With this new infrastructure, in addition to reinforcing its healthcare capacity, the Hospital strengthens its academic role as a training ground for residents in plastic surgery, physiatry, nursing, and other related fields.

For more than 40 years, Hospital San Vicente Fundación Medellín has healed, beyond the skin, thousands of burn patients. With this inauguration, held on July 15, it reaffirms its commitment to high-complexity, humane, and specialized care at the service of Antioquia and other regions of the country.

San Vicente Fundación Adults Burn Unit celebrates 40 years, inaugurates its new area, and expands care capacity With the objective of offering safer, more humane, and specialized care to patients with high-complexity burns, the Hospital San Vicente Fundación Medellín inaugurated its new Adults Burn Unit in commemoration of its 40th anniversary.
